What's On Somali Young Women's Group About Come together in a great space, to have fun! Learn new skills such as cooking, poetry, drama, relax with arts, crafts and games, and get active with sports. This is an exciting group where you can build new friendships, share your opinions, thoughts and ideas and give back to your local community. This group was started by the amazing Saada, a mum who wanted to give girls in the area a safe and fun place to learn to cook and where to meet their friends. Saada is one of the most caring and generous people and a true leader in the local community. The group grew as time went on and we're now supporting the young women by bringing in new activities, putting on trips and organising creative programmes. Vanessa Kisuule enables young women to express themselves through poetry We're delighted to welcome Vanessa Kisuule, the Bristol City Poet, to the group! Vanessa is one of the artists in residence on The University of Bristol Temple Quarter Project. She's working with community groups exploring what the area means to them and their hopes for the future through a series of spoken-word workshops. “I am one of the artists in residence for the new Temple Quarter campus being built in Temple Meads. The campus will have considerable effects on neighbouring areas, including Lawrence Hill. As part of my residency, I wanted to do creative workshops with people from the area to start conversations around things like education, job opportunities and life aspirations. Working with young people is especially interesting as they are growing up into a rapidly changing world and their projections as to what this means for their future are really interesting and important to observe”. (Vanessa Kisuule) The young women in the group are delighted to work with her throughout February, preparing a showcase at the end of the programme and a dramatisation of their poems. Travelling Light Theatre is facilitating these workshops and providing the space for the showcase event. The poetry workshops are followed by a three week course of drama sessions for the young women to dramatize their spoken-word work in March. Travelling Light is also offering six spaces for young women to join them on the Young Critics event this half term. Details Ages? 11-18 year olds When? Every Monday Time? 5-7pm Where?
