YAB – The Courts Youth Advisory Board

The Courts will become an enterprise hub in Bristol for young people and creative businesses, where we learn and share expertise.

We aim to make this space positive, creative, and inspiring. To keep young people at the heart of the decision making, we have a youth steering group, who will make decisions for the space.

They are creating art, managing events, learning more about the history of the building to bring the space to life and make decisions on how we can make this a valuable space for young people and creatives.

About

What is YAB?

YAB is the Youth Advisory Board for The Courts development project, a group of young people aged 16 – 25 from the West of England (Bristol, Bath, South Glos & North Somerset) who meet to share their thoughts and ideas on Bristol’s next Creative Enterprise Hub, The Courts. Previously known as The Courts Youth Steering Group, YAB is the fresh approach to how things will work...

The types of things you will advise on for The Courts:

  • Programming of events
  • Digital Heritage Interpretation – an app!
  • Types of opportunities needed for Young People
  • Arts organisations you want as tenants in the building
  • Inform the design of the building

This is for you if you:

  • Want to build your leadership skills
  • Want to connect with other young people
  • Are interested in making positive change at Creative Youth Network to benefit our community
  • Are 16-25 years old
  • Want to find creative ways to share YAB’s work

Our Expectations of You:

  • Participate in monthly meetings for a minimum of 6 months
  • Proactive engagement with communication outside of meetings
  • Give your honest advice and thoughts for The Courts
  • Listen and respect other members’ views
  • Complete an evaluation form at the start and end of your time in YAB
  • Contribute to documenting YAB’s progress in your chosen media format which will be shared through Creative Youth Network’s communication channels and with the wider Bristol community. E.g., Instagram takeovers, vlogs, radio shows

We commit to:

  • Paying for your bus tickets to attend meetings and other YAB events
  • Organising Masterclasses and Go-Sees with arts industry professionals and organisations
  • Connecting you with other Youth Boards in the country to grow your network with young leaders
  • Ensuring your advice is fed back accurately and championed at the centre of decision making for The Courts
  • Providing time for 1-to-1s with our Youth and Community Inclusion Officer, Amber-Ruth, to set goals for your participation in YAB and any roles you may wish to take on within the group
  • Ensuring meetings are accessible such as hybrid meetings and appropriate venues
  • Write you a reference for future employment and applications
  • Recruiting new members every 6 months to encourage fresh thinking and drive within YAB
  • Creating a welcoming and inclusive space for diverse conversations
